The award went to Judith Shizuru
of Stanford. Scientist Irv Weissman and Robert
Klein, former chairman of the stem cell agency, both spoke on behalf
of her
appeal of a negative decision by grant reviewers.
At the suggestion of the current board
chairman, J.T. Thomas, the board placed conditions on the grant
would stipulate Stanford pick up certain unknown, additional costs if
necessary.
